The Brant Rant is a brand new series of events happening right here in Brantford. Barb Day is the organizer and host of The Brant Rant Poetry Slam and is thrilled to bring the entertaining and diverse art form of spoken word to our community.
On Friday, September 12, 2014, twelve professional spoken word poets from across the province performed to a packed house at The Brantford Arts Block. The talent was through the roof, as these poets introduced Brantford to the art of spoken word. Their powerful high-energy forms of expression enraptured their audience. The featured poets have performed at provincial, national and international levels.
This event kicked off a series of poetry slams. Starting on Friday, October 10 at 7:00 p.m. and continuing on the second Friday of every month, The Brant Rant will hold a poetry slam open to the public to perform and compete for cash and prizes. These events will be held at The Brantford Station Gallery, 5 Wadsworth Street, Brantford.
Organizers envision The Brant Rant as a means to establishing Brantford as a centre of excellence for spoken word poetry. Fashioned after similar events in communities across Canada, The Brant Rant will host public poetry performances in a fun and competitive style.
A poetry slam is very distinct from traditional public readings of poetry or prose. It's a live performance where competitors must engage and entertain their audience. Successful participants will develop their creative writing skills, their on-stage persona and respond to the competitive nature of the event.
The ultimate goal of The Brant Rant is:
- to have a positive effect on the Brantford arts community
- to foster the development of local artists
- eventually represent the city positively on a provincial and national level
- have positive and rewarding collaborative experiences with community partners
- introduce as many individuals as possible to the art of spoken word
