This week marks the launch of the new Brantford Church Hockey League (BCHL) Heritage House League Jerseys. The Heritage Jerseys pay homage to past hockey teams that have excited and delighted Brantford fans for years. Players in Novice, Peewee, Bantam and Midget will don the jerseys of six past Brantford teams. Jerseys include: Brantford Foresters, Brantford Smoke, Brantford Blast, Brantford Penguins, Brantford Alexanders and Brantford Golden Eagles.
By paying respect to the Brantford teams of the past, the BCHL wishes to give back to the community that supports them and is helping in the rebirth of their league. BCHL Executive Deanna Basso states, “The Heritage House League Jerseys are generating excitement within our league. We provide comfortable and family-oriented hockey and have built a reputation as the ‘Best House League in the region’. This is an excellent opportunity to educate about the great hockey of our past and to bring our community together for such an exciting project”. Partnering with the BCHL is Brantford Giant Tiger. BCHL plays out of the Brantford and District Civic Centre and Brantford Lions Park Arena.
Many members of the community have fond memories of one or more of these teams. I, for one, got my first job with the Brantford Smoke. And seeing the dragon on the front of the jersey brings back so many great memories and amazing players who made us stand up and cheer for Brantford. (Go! Smoke! Go!)
So you may see these Heritage Jerseys in the community over the next few months. They are a fantastic way of saying thank you to Branford’s hockey past while shaping and molding Brantford’s hockey future.
