Brant Family and Children’s Services (FACS) is holding an art show entitled “Reflections” to exhibit the art work of the families, children and youth with whom they work with, as well as resource families and staff members. The exhibited works will reflect the experiences both with the foster/adoptive care system and with mental health. This has been a unique experience for all involved, as developing the art work has also created opportunities to reflect, discuss and educate. Experiences in these areas can be very difficult to share with others, and creating art has been a wonderful opportunity for those involved to have their stories and feelings, voiced and heard.
Brant FACS has approximately 275 children and youth in care. Like many other child welfare agencies across the province, there is a significant shortage of foster and adoptive homes. We hope that those who may be interested in becoming foster or adoptive parents will come and see the show and also obtain some valuable information that we will be offering at this venue.
A kick-off Art Show Event will be held on Friday, May 8, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Brantford Arts Block (111 Sherwood Dr., Brantford) with music, door prizes, special guests and a display of art work. Brant FACS will also be celebrating Mental Health Awareness Week and Children and Youth in Care Day, and informing the public of the need for foster and adoptive families. Information and representatives will be available from Brant FACS, Family Counselling Centre of Brant and H.O.P.E. (Helping Ourselves through Peer Support & Employment).
Brant FACS and the artists involved invite and encourage the community to attend this free event, to come and look at the art display and to speak with staff and artists in attendance. This will be an excellent opportunity to gain a better understanding of what it means to experience mental health issues, as well as foster/adoptive care.
Brant FACS will also be displaying the art at the Lynden Park Mall on Saturday, May 9, 2015 during mall hours, the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Thursday, May 14, 2015 at 109 George Street from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
