Among the long list of businesses to temporarily close in Brantford, Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant is one that hits close to home. A fixture in our community since 1956, Glenhyrst has always been a point of pride in Brantford.
Sitting on a beautifully landscaped sixteen-acre park along the banks of the Grand River, Glenhyrst welcomes nearly 30,000 visitors a year. The gallery offers contemporary fine art exhibitions, guided tours, classes, lectures, events, an art rental service, school education program, and rental of the estate facilities. In addition, the Gallery has a permanent collection of over 600 artworks.
Glenhyrst hosted over 40 events in 2019 and is also the home of several of our community’s most anticipated events throughout the year, one of which was supposed to be held in just a few days. Family Arts Day, originally scheduled for Sunday, May 24, 2020 has sadly been cancelled in light of COVID-19 and our community’s effort to stay home and stay apart to reduce the spread of this virus. This free family-friendly event filled the grounds of Glenhyrst with over 35 pop-up booths, many of which include community businesses and local non-profit organizations. Children enjoyed canvas painting, looming, duct tape creations, flower planting, chess, and many more fun activities in year’s past. We are sad that the event will not take place in 2020 and look forward to its triumphant return in 2021.
In addition To Family Arts Day, Glenhyrst also has the gallery’s (and one of the City’s) largest fundraisers of the year, Taste of Glenhyrst. And for the whole month of December, the community can also enjoy “The Brantford Lights at Glenhyrst” at no charge.
Even though the gallery doors are temporarily closed, you can still enjoy the beautiful gardens and surrounding trails. You can also keep up-to-date with the Gallery and its staff on Facebook. Since closing, Glenhyrst staff has been staying connected to their 3,000+ followers and the Brantford community by sharing interesting facts, quizzes and most recently by posting favourite photos and songs chosen by Glenhyrst staff members. This personal touch is an example of the rapport the staff at Glenhyrst so easily establishes with their visitors, and especially their members.
If you love Glenhyrst like we do, one of the best ways you can support this local non-profit community organization is buy purchasing a membership, if you are able to. Standard membership rates are $20 (youth/senior), $30 (individual) and $40 (family). Although you will become a member of Glenhyrst on the date of purchase, they will extend your expiry date to one year from when their doors reopen, rather than the day you join, to ensure no time lost in enjoying the benefits of membership. Membership entitles you to discounts on classes, workshops, facility rentals, and more. Your contributions will also help Glenhyrst weather this storm and chip away at the potentially immense shortfall that they are anticipating to have this year.
