Sport Networking Meeting Recap: September 12, 2019

Welcome

Home2 Suites by Hilton Brantford and Holiday Inn Express & Suites Brantford collaboratively hosted September’s Sport Networking Meeting.  After the presentations, something a little different took place: attendees were provided with a guided tour of each property including two guestrooms and the hotel amenities. A delicious lunch was prepared and enjoyed by all, many raving about the melt-in-your-mouth chocolate chip cookies. A big thank you to both hotels for the generous hospitality!

Ela Stypa Jones, Sport Tourism Coordinator, kicked off the meeting by acknowledging the talent and skill of Connor Webb, Tourism Brantford’s summer school student. Thanks to his passion for photography, there are now newly updated pictures of Brantford’s sports facilities. Ela invited the Director of Sales from each property up to the front. Lindsay Haynes, Director of Sales with Holiday Inn Express indicated that they are continuously interested in working with sport organizations when hosting tournaments and offer a rebate program. Marilyn Frame, Director of Sales with Home2 Suites, was excited to announce that the Sport Networking meeting is the first to utilize their meeting space. As well, they will be hosting an open house on September 19th from 5 to 7:30 p.m. offering cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. The development and opening of the new hotel facilities has added to the portfolio of amazing accommodations available in the city. Brantford is now just short of 700 hotel rooms – excellent news for the Tournament Capital of Ontario.

Presentations

City of Brantford

Nicole Drake, Manager of Tourism, Culture & Sport, provided an update on the City of Brantford Sport Tourism Strategy. The City has been working with the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance consulting services to develop the strategy. A thank you went out to all who participated in the consultation, attended focus groups and provided input. The final report has been brought to Council and approval is expected by the end of September. Tourism staff will have a presentation prepared at the November Sport Networking event.

D & D United Martial Arts

Bryon Davis shared an inspirational video (with a great soundtrack) of the successful and talented students who have spent countless hours at the martial arts school honing their skills. They have competed in international world championships, bringing home many metals. Bryon also listed the amazing silent auction donations they have ready, but they are still looking for donations. The annual Dinner Dance Silent Auction is Halloween themed and every year they are looking to outdo the previous year with costumes and festivities! Last year Bryon was dressed as Tinkerbell – how do you beat that?

Brantford Sports Council

Bill Harding promoted the Cavalcade of Sports Kickoff, taking place October 5th from 10:30 a.m. until noon. This event showcases the Access Storage Sports and Entertainment Complex by providing a tour and updates to all who attend. The Access Storage Sports and Entertainment Complex includes 74,000 sq ft of multi-sports activities and can be used for workshops, clinics, and fundraising events. The Cavalcade of Sports is a year round activity to promote and support community engagement and fundraising initiatives for groups and organizations alike.

Behind the Scenes Hotel Tours

The group was split with one touring Home2 Suites by Hilton and the other the neighboring Holiday Inn Express & Suites. Each group was shown one standard room, one wheelchair accessible room and hotel facilities such as laundry room, gym, pool and outdoor dining area. It was an excellent way to see the beautiful, quality hotels Brantford has available.

Shout-Outs!

Fred Winterbon promoted the Laurier YMCA open house where a demonstration of pickle ball will take place. Check out the facility and try a hand at pickle ball, a paddle sport which combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis.  Jason Freeze from BScene informed the group about the opportunity to post and advertise events online for free, it’s easy https://www.bscene.ca/event-submit/Liz Martorano was very happy with the outcome of the Burst Colour 5K+ Run/Walk held on September 8th on Grandparents Day – a fun-filled day spent with family and friends. Greig Graham with BRANT.one is always looking for local sports information, scores, news, photos and stories to share. Keep BRANT.one in mind. A true example of hospitality was given when this story was shared: the Holiday Inn Express & Suites prepared 25 grab bags for the parents and players of a team that had to leave before breakfast was available at the hotel – what a way to go above and beyond. Breakfast is, after all, the most important meal of the day and was very much appreciated by the team.

Mark your calendar for the next meeting on Thursday, November 14th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Towneplace Suites by Marriott Brantford and Conference Centre.
